Worksheet 2:  TIFs & TSFs for Polynomial Functions

Skills Practiced: for a given polynomial function f(x):  finding its Tangent Intercept Function (TIF), tif(x), and its Tangent Slope Function (TSF), tsf(x), relating the formulas defining these functions to the graph of f(x), visualizing & sketching the graph of f(x), finding and plotting tangent lines to the graph of f(x).

Written Assignment:  For each polynomial function f(x) below:  find its tif(x) and tsf(x), find the x-coordinates of its bump points (peaks, valleys, plateaus) by solving tsf(x) = 0, use this information to improve the graphs for these functions that you created in Worksheet 1.  Also, for each f(x) below use tif(x) and tsf(x) to find and plot the tangent line to the graph of f(x) at the point (1, f(1)).  Note: try to do this by hand, before checking it on your graphing calculator.

Skills Assessment:  We will have a quiz on this activity one week from today, without graphing calculators.
